Our Dependence on Chat GPT: Are We Lonely or Just Looking for Convenience?

As ChatGPT becomes increasingly woven into everyday life, many turn to the platform for more than answers to basic questions. But as artificial intelligence continues to replace genuine human advice, personal instincts, and social interaction, when will society draw a line between convenience and dependence?

Since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, the program has evolved into more than just a practical tool—it has become a source of advice, comfort, reassurance, and answers for millions of concerns. Users now turn to ChatGPT with everyday questions, trusting the platform to guide them through particular challenges and difficult decisions. Throughout its development, ChatGPT became capable of offering suggestions, assisting with assignments, providing health-related information, and helping to navigate nearly every aspect of daily life. While that may seem useful, AI is now deeply embedded in society, with many users developing an attachment to it. But as more people turn to the application for assistance, a larger question arises: Are we simply embracing convenience, or are we slowly becoming emotionally dependent on a robot?

ChatGPT was initially treated as a practical way to obtain information, receive assistance with assignments, and generate ideas. Over time, however, those occasional interactions developed into something much more intimate. Individuals suddenly found themselves relying on ChatGPT as a crutch they could lean on whenever they felt uncertain, overwhelmed, or unable to reach an answer on their own. A study has shown that the number of those using the platform “has grown from 14% to 24% of all conversations, meaning people use ChatGPT more as a search engine replacement for information and guidance” (Meyer). By July 2025, ChatGPT had reached approximately 700 million weekly active users globally, making it almost inevitable that some would begin turning to the AI model for direction on important decisions rather than just simple facts.

How, then, did ChatGPT gradually become such a staple in so many lives? One possible answer is simple: many people are lonely. The system provides a private, judgment-free space that is always available to provide guidance about matters that some may not feel comfortable sharing with others. However, individuals are beginning to treat AI-generated responses as  substitutes for genuine human advice, straying from the conversations and relationships that once provided heartfelt support. In fact, one study found that “users who engaged in the most emotionally expressive personal conversations with the chatbots tended to experience higher loneliness” (Hall). While this finding does not prove that the frequent use of AI certainly causes loneliness, it reveals a concerning relationship between unhealthy dependence on AI and increased loneliness. Without fully realizing it, the public may be allowing artificial intelligence to replace meaningful interaction simply because they are relieved to receive reassurance from somewhere.

Frequent reliance on ChatGPT may be associated with weaker offline social relationships. Although the platform cannot truly understand human sentiment, some may begin placing greater trust in its responses than their own judgment. This growing need is reflected in the experience of a frequent ChatGPT user who requested anonymity. They explain, “When I am having a personal dilemma, sometimes it feels easier to work it out with AI rather than burden people with my problems.” This admission highlights how AI can become a substitute for vulnerable conversations and reassurance often sought from others. As a result, many may become less willing to confide in those around them, weakening the connections they once relied on for comfort and understanding.

Not every instance of turning to ChatGPT for private matters results in emotional dependency. Generally, AI can help organize complicated thoughts, prepare for heavy discussions, or consider different perspectives on certain situations. The problem, however, begins when people can no longer process difficult emotions or decisions without consulting it. As a result, what was once a convenient resource may begin to reduce a person’s confidence in handling situations and making decisions.

ChatGPT’s reassuring responses can make individuals feel understood, but should not be confused with sincere connection. Although the tool was originally intended to make information and assistance more accessible, a portion of those who use it have gradually begun turning to it for needs beyond practical help. AI may offer answers and new perspectives, but it cannot replicate the authenticity and empathy found in real relationships. As its presence continues to grow, people must recognize where convenience ends and unhealthy attachment begins.
